Valuing and rewarding our staff

The old adage “a business is only as good as its people” applies perfectly to care homes. The best care homes, have the best people. It’s that simple.

At Arlington House, we understand the importance of employing the right staff members. We leave no stone unturned to find, acquire and retain the best employees in the Warrington area. Our commitment to our staff can be seen in the following three areas.

Empathy for the great work that they do.

First and foremost, we have genuine empathy and appreciation for the work that all our staff do. Whether it’s care, cleaning, cooking, maintenance, or activities, everyone is treated equally as we all share a common goal – to enrich our residents’ lives each and every day.

We know that working in a care home can be a tremendously rewarding and fulfilling job, but we also know there are times when it can be stressful and demanding. This is where being a family-run business gives us a big advantage. We genuinely care for our staff and aim to provide support and reassurance at all times.

All our staff are given manageable workloads, they are supported and assisted by their colleagues on more complex tasks, and they are given on-going training to help them develop in their role. Most importantly, however, we want them to enjoy their jobs and have fun while they are at work. After all, a happy team is a productive team.

Competitive pay and benefits.

Many care homes across the country pay their staff minimum wage. We don’t feel this reflects the importance of the work that they do, and consequently we pay all our staff (regardless of age, role, or length of service) a minimum of 15% above minimum wage. We know from the feedback given by our staff that this level of pay is a big help with the current rising cost of living.

Keeping on the pay front, we pay double-rates on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day – this shows our appreciation for people who are away from their own families on these memorable days. We also offer a loyalty bonus for anyone completing 1 and 2 years with us. And all staff get an annual bonus at the end of the year, plus a guaranteed wage increase every April.

And it’s not just on wages where we try and make a difference. Arlington staff are given on-going treats and incentives. Krispy Kreme doughnuts, artisan cakes, pick & mix sweets and a choice of wine or chocolate for Christmas – are just some of the small touches, that often make a big difference.

But don’t just take our word for it. One third of our employees have worked at Arlington House for over 4 years – so we like to think we are doing something right.

Desirable working conditions and on-going training.

Just like we want our residents to enjoy living at Arlington House, we want our staff to enjoy working here too. That’s why we have a healthy ratio of staff to residents to ensure our employees remain fresh, responsive, and attentive throughout their shift.

Furthermore, staff members are given regular breaks, which are never compromised under any circumstances, as these breaks are vital to manage their energy levels and wellbeing. Care staff are also provided with a free hot lunch and evening meal. And to ensure all employees retain a healthy work-life balance, we offer flexible working hours where needed.

To keep our people up-to-speed, we offer an on-going training programme which addresses any gaps in knowledge and enables us to constantly maximise quality levels. Finally, many of our employees have been promoted within the company and subsequently seen significant wage increases – which shows there is a clear career path for anyone looking to progress.
